At least five members of the police were injured in Companiganj upazila town of Sylhet district on Sunday when a group of transport workers attacked them to snatch away a truck seized by the police for not having valid documents.
Companiganj police station officer-in-charge Md Ratan Sheikh said that a police check-post was set up in front of the Companiganj upazila council and the police personnel there seized a truck as its driver failed to show the required documents.
He said that, minutes after the seizure, a group of transport workers rushed to the spot and locked in a heated altercation with the police personnel there.
‘At one point, they assaulted the police personnel, left five of them injured, and took away the seized truck,’ he claimed.
He said that the injured police personnel were given primary treatment.
The incident took place only a day after the arrest of Companiganj upazila Awami League vice-president and Telikhal union council chairman Abdul Wadud Alfu Miah.
The OC suspected that Alfu’s supporters could create chaos in the area and that is why they were continuing the search operation in the area to nab the offenders.
Alfu is an accused in 23 cases, including a case filed for rampant looting of stone from Sadapathar of the Bholaganj area under Companiganj upazila, the police said.
OC Ratan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the police produced Alfu before a district judicial magistrate court and sought the court’s permission to take him in police custody for five days for interrogation in a case but the court sent him to jail.
