A mob injured three police personnel and damaged a vehicle early Saturday when the police tried to rescue a youth confined by local people at Pirerbazar of the Shah Paran police station in Sylhet city.

According to local residents, Faysal Ahmed, 28, along with his family, has been living at a rented house at Daspara of Pirerbazar for several years.

Faysal recently recorded a video of an internal dispute of one of his nearby families and some local people asked him Friday evening to delete the video.

As Faysal refused to delete the video record, they kept him confined to a shop at Pirerbazar to force him to delete the video clip, local traders said.

Shah Paran police station officer-in-charge Monir Hossain, who also was injured in the mob attack, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that a patrol team of the police went to the spot early Saturday but failed to rescue Faysal.

He said that he, along with another police team, reached the spot at about 12:45am and tried to rescue Faisal.

‘But, a group of the local residents got angry and started hurling bricks and stones at the police, leaving three police personnel, including myself, injured and our vehicle damaged,’ Monir Hossain said.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner Mohammed Saiful Islam said that additional police force rushed to the spot immediately after receiving the information and brought the situation under control.

‘Eight people, including Faysal, were picked up from the spot,’ he said, adding that the injured police personnel were also given treatment at city hospital.

Monir said in the afternoon that Faysal and his two brothers were shown arrested in a case filed with the police station by a Daspara resident and the rest five were shown arrested in another case for assaulting the police.
