Yasin Al Mridul Dewan has been elected vice president and Md Raihan Khan general secretary of the Gono University Central Students’ Union (GUCSU) in Savar, election officials announced late Thursday.

Chief election commissioner Md Rafiqul Alam declared the results around 11:00pm, with other commission members present.


Yasin, a Bangla department student, won the VP post with 692 votes, narrowly defeating Md Abdul Mazed Salafi, who secured 677. Raihan, from the department of veterinary and animal sciences, became GS with 1,121 votes, beating Md Ontu Dewan’s 810.

In other key races, Samiul Hasan Shovon was elected assistant general secretary with 1,400 votes, defeating Shifatur Rahman Shishir by 161. Khandakar Abdur Rahim became treasurer with 1,450 votes, beating Salauddin by 497.

Among cultural and organisational posts: Faisal Ahmed was elected sports secretary (1,477 votes), Abdullah Al Noman assistant sports secretary (1,307), Md Maruf literature and cultural secretary (2,394), and Leesha Chakma assistant cultural secretary (2,195).

Other winners included Sharmin Akter (office secretary), Md Jannatul Ferdous (publicity secretary), and Md Monowar Hossain Ontor (welfare and canteen affairs secretary).

In faculty-based elections, Mohiul Alam Dolon won from Agriculture, Humayun Kabir from Veterinary and Animal Sciences, while unopposed winners in Arts and Social Sciences included Shakil Ahmed, Md Selim Ahmed Oli, Md Mehedi Hasan, and Mintuju Akter Mim. In Science and Engineering, Meherun Khilji Mitu and Md Imdadul Haque Milon were elected. Nashrun Senjuti Oroni and Partha Sarker were elected unopposed from Health Sciences.

After voting ended, activists of the BNP and its student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal staged processions at the university gate and attempted to force their way inside.

Law enforcement intervened to disperse them. Protesters chanted slogans rejecting the results and demanding re-election.

No party-backed panels contested the GUCSU polls, as politics is officially banned on the Gono University campus.

This was the fourth GUCSU central election, with the previous one held in 2018. Voting took place in 19 booths on Thursday, with 4,672 registered voters. About 70 per cent cast ballots. Results were declared nine hours after polls closed, with some 400 law enforcement personnel deployed to maintain order.
