The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Tuesday welcomed chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus’s twin announcements of the July declaration and the forthcoming national election, calling them a pivotal moment in Bangladesh’s return to democratic order.

BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, responding to the reporters’ questions following the chief adviser’s televised address, said that the declaration of the 13th National Parliamentary Election in February 2026 would clear the lingering doubts and usher in an election-focused political atmosphere.

‘This has ended the uncertainty surrounding the electoral process. The nation is now heading towards a constructive and participatory democratic transition,’ he told reporters.

He expressed optimism that the announcement would help restore political stability and revive investors’ confidence.

‘This move will eliminate indecision in governance and the economy. We expect renewed dynamism in all sectors,’ Salahuddin said.

Addressing the July Proclamation, Salahuddin reaffirmed BNP’s pledge to give it full constitutional and state recognition.

On the roadmap for elections, he voiced hope that the Election Commission would promptly announce the schedule.

He praised the initiative and termed it a ‘long-awaited signal to the nation’.

He urged the people to prepare for a free, fair, and globally respected election, saying, ‘We are confident that this will be one of the most transparent and admired elections.’

Terming August 5 a historic milestone, he paid tribute to the martyrs and pledged to uphold the spirit of the anti-fascist struggle through continued democratic reforms.

Meanwhile, chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus confirmed in his Tuesday night address that a formal letter will be sent to the Chief Election Commissioner, requesting arrangements for the election in February 2026.

His speech marked the first anniversary of the July Uprising, which laid the foundation for the present interim government.

The authoritarian Awami League regime was ousted on August 5, 2024 amid a student-led mass uprising.
