Parties under the Left Democratic Alliance, the Revolutionary Workers Party of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-Jasod on Tuesday abstained from joining the July Declaration ceremony.

The interim government hosted the ceremony at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad premises at 5:00pm where chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus presented the declaration in the presence of several political parties, marking the first anniversary of July Mass Uprising Day.

However, the party leaders abstaining from the programme told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that  they, despite being invited, did not attend the ceremony because they had not been engaged in the drafting of the declaration.

RWPB general secretary Saiful Huq complained that the interim government was pursuing a policy of creating division among the political parties that actively engaged in years-long protests against the fascist Awami League regime instead of uniting them.

‘The latest example was excluding most of the political parties from the drafting of the July Declaration. Our party was among the excluded and we cannot join the ceremony as merely a passive observer,’ Saiful said.

Parties in the Left Democratic Alliance also conveyed similar feelings. To observe the day of the fall of the Awami League regime, the LDB organised a mass rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.

Socialist Party of Bangladesh (Marxist) chief coordinator Masud Rana said that his party was completely in the dark about the July Declaration . ‘That’s why our party abstained from the ceremony.’

Communist Party of Bangladesh central committee secretary Sajedul Haque Rubel said four of his party leaders were invited to join the ceremony. But the party decided not to attend the programme.

‘Instead, the CPB organised a mass rally in the Purana Paltan area to observe the first anniversary of the July uprising. Later, the CPB joined the LDA programme,’ Sajedul said.

Bangladesh Jasod presidium member Mushtuq Husian also said that his party abstained from the programme.

However, three delegates of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD joined the programme, said the party general secretary Shahid Uddin Mahmod Shapon.

Several major parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, National Citizen Party, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Ganosamhati Andolan, Amar Bangladesh Party, Gano Forum, Jatiya Gano Front, Gano Adhikar Parishad, Nagorik Oikko, were present when the chief adviser delivered the July Declaration.
