The National Citizens Party on Friday adopted the party constitution, setting out its organisational structure and the process for electing key leadership positions.

The party adopted the constitution in its sixth general meeting at its central office in the capital鈥檚 Bangla Motor area.

As outlined in the newly adopted constitution, the president and the general secretary of the central committee would be elected directly by votes from the councilors across the country.

An individual member will be able to hold each of the two top positions for a maximum of two terms in his or her lifetime and the leaders will be accountable to the party鈥檚 political council, according to the constitution.

The party鈥檚 member secretary, Akter Hossain, announced the structural framework, included in the constitution, at a press conference following the general meeting.

He said that the political council would be formed through elections conducted by the national council and would consist of a minimum of eleven and a maximum of fifteen members.

Of these, eleven members will be directly elected, with at least three required to be women.

The president and the general secretary will serve on the council by virtue of their positions, while the remaining two members will be nominated jointly by them.

The national council will be responsible for electing the political council.

The national council would comprise members of the central committee, the executive committees of constituent organisations, five representatives from each of the district-level committees and two representatives from each of the upazila-level committees.

Akter said that the NCP would have a central committee comprising the president, vice-president, general secretary, joint-general secretary, divisional organising secretary, necessary number of general members and, in some cases, district unit presidents.

The term of the central committee would be three years, with the next council to be held within the final ninety days of the term.

During the meeting, the party unanimously resolved to submit an application to the Election Commission on Sunday for official registration.

The party also decided that the founding convening committee would retain the authority to make further amendments to the adopted constitution, if necessary before the next council convened.

According to NCP leaders who attended the general meeting, the constitution outlines that the chief of the party would not be allowed to become the chief of the government.

They also said that the meeting discussed the party鈥檚 emergence from the spirit of the July Uprising and affirmed that it would not compromise on fundamental reforms of the state.
