The National Citizen Party on Wednesday issued a show-cause notice to its senior joint chief organiser Abdul Hannan Masud for allegedly securing the release of three detainees from police custody without party authorisation.

The notice, signed by joint office secretary Saleh Uddin Sifat, asked Hannan to submit a written explanation within three working days.

The three, who identified them as coordinators, were released three hours after the police had detained them for pressing the police for arresting a book publisher who was not wanted in any case.

A video clip went viral on the social media showing an argument between police officials and ‘coordinators’, triggering public criticisms.

On Tuesday, NCP leader Hannan reportedly visited the police station and secured their release with an undertaking.

The notice mentioned that one of the detainees, Saiful Islam Rabbi, former convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’s Mohammadpur unit, was previously relieved of duties for unethical activities.

Hannan’s intervention in the matter despite Saiful’s removal from the party raised concerns within the party, the notice said, adding that such interventions without consultation undermined party discipline.

‘You are instructed to submit a written explanation to the head of the disciplinary committee within three working days, explaining your action and why organisational measures should not be taken against you,’ the notice reportedly read.

The detainees also misbehaved with the police while pressing for the arrest of the publisher, Md Golam Mostofa, when the police went to address a National Emergency Service 999 call alleging that 15–20 people were trying to invade the caller’s house on Road-4 at the capital’s Dhanmondi, according to the police.
