Veteran freedom fighter and Gonoforum president Mostafa Mohsin Montu died at a hospital in the capital on Sunday.

He was 80.


‘He died at about 5:00pm at Square Hospital. He was suffering from lung diseases for a long time,’ the party central leader and media coordinator Mohammad Ullah Modhu said.

Modhu said that the party president was admitted to the hospital two months ago.

Mostafa Mohsin Montu left his wife, four daughters and a son to mourn his death.

He was involved in the politics of the Bangladesh Chhatra League in his student life.

He was a central leader of the Bangladesh Juba League and the Awami League.

He left the Awami Awami League and joined the Gonoform when jurist Dr Kamal Hossain formed the party.

His body was taken to his village home in Keraniganj Sunday evening.

His body will be kept at the Central Shaheed Minar for one hour from 2:00pm on Monday so that people from all walks of life can show last respect to him.

The body will be then taken to Dhaka University Central Mosque where a namaz-e-janaza will be held.

He will be buried in Banani Graveyard in the afternoon, said a party press release.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chairman Tarique Rahman expressed deep shock at the death of Mostafa Mohsin Montu.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir rushed to the Square Hospital, visited the body and condoled his family members.

Mostafa Mohsin Montu wanted to establish a democratic Bangladesh and his role in establishing democracy would be remembered, Mirza Fakhrul said.

Gonoforum’s emeritus president Dr Kamal Hossain and general secretary Mohammad Mizanur Rahman expressed deep shock at the death of the party president.

Leaders of the Workers Party of Bangladesh and Jatiya Samajtanrik Dal-Jasod in separate statements expressed deep shock at the death of Mostafa Mohsin Montu.
