Political and rights organisations on Friday condemned the attack on three rights and student activists by three Bengali people while returning after addressing a rally at Kawkhali in Rangamati demanding justice for Kalpana Chakma on Thursday.
The Hill Women’s Federation organised the rally at the uoazila on the occasion of 29 years of its organising secretary Kalpana Chakma’s disappearance.
Ganatantrik Adhikar Committee, a platform working for the democratic rights of people, Bangladesh Chhatra Union and Revolutionary Communist League of Bangladesh in separate statements on Friday demanded punishment for the attackers.
They also demanded punishment for the abductors of Kalpana Chakma, who had abducted in 1996 and never returned.
The victims, rights activist Marzia Prova, University of Liberal Arts lecturer Oliur Sun and Revolutionary Students’ Unity’s Dhaka University unit president Nuzia Hasin Rasha, came under attack while they were returning to Dhaka after attending the rally on Thursday afternoon.
Ganatantrik Adhikar Committee in its statement said that besides the attack on the three activists, Bengali drivers of the vehicles who brought attendees to the rally were allegedly picked up and tortured by unidentified people.
Condemning the torture on the drivers, the platform demanded a fair investigation into the attack and justice for enforced disappearance victims, including Kalpana Chakma.
Bangladesh Students’ Union in its statement said that the attack was a heinous attack on the people’s right to freedom of expression.
The three attackers were the leaders of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Kawkhali Degree College unit, the statement said.
Bangladesh Students’ Union also called for unity to play a conscious role in realising the rights of the national minority people in the country.
Meanwhile, Revolutionary Communist League of Bangladesh said that those who were against getting justice for Kalpana Chakma were responsible for Thursday’s attack.
The political body in its statement demanded investigation and trial into the abduction of Kalpana Chakma.
