Justice has remained elusive for the last three decades for the family of Kalpana Chakma, organising secretary of the Hill Women鈥檚 Federation, as she has remained traceless till date since her abduction at dead of night on June 12, 1996 from her home in Baghaichari of Rangamati.
Her family alleged that the individuals accused of disappearing Kalpana were not even interrogated and the case in this regard was dismissed by a trial court in Rangfamati in April, 2024.
Kalpana鈥檚 brother Kalindi Kumar Chakma told 抖阴精品 on Wednesday that their family had no hope for getting justice as the case was dismissed without even interrogation of the accused individuals.
鈥業n the past 29 years, the police did not interrogate the accused, but filed a report,鈥 he said.
There were efforts to save the accused and it finally happened, Kalindi said, adding that they would, however, continue the legal battle as her sister had remained missing since she had been abducted in 1996.
On October 19, 2016, Kalindi filed a no-confidence petition with the court, rejecting a police final report submitted in September that year that cleared all the suspects.
On April 23 last year, a Rangamati court accepted the final report submitted by the police clearing all the suspects, including army鈥檚 Lieutenant Ferdous Kaisar Khan, in a case filed with the Baghaichari police by Kalindi Kumar Chakma.
鈥榃e filed a 鈥渃rime revision鈥 with the court against the order that dismissed the case last year. The hearing date is fixed for June 18,鈥 Kalpana鈥檚 lawyer Jewel Dewan told 抖阴精品 on Wednesday.
Kalpana鈥檚 family also alleged that none of the investigation officers interrogated the suspects鈥擣erdous Kaisar Khan, a now retired serviceman who was a lieutenant of the Bangladesh Army at the time of the incident, Village Defence Party member Nurul Huq and police constable Saleh Ahmed.
The Bangladesh government earlier informed the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances that Hill Women鈥檚 Federation organising secretary Kalpana Chakma was still missing after her abduction in Baghaichari of Rangamati in 1996.
Kalpana Chakma, 23, was allegedly abducted from her house in Baghaichhari on June 12, 1996, several hours before the seventh national election. She was campaigning for independent candidate Bijoy Ketan Chakma, then a senior presidium member of Pahari Gana Parishad, a hill people鈥檚 organisation.聽
Rights organisations, meanwhile, organised protest rallies in Sajek in Rangamati and other areas of the hill districts, demanding justice for Kalpana Chakma marking the day of her disappearance.
