The Election Commission on Wednesday decided to restore Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration as a political party and return its electoral symbol, the scales.
Election Commissioner Abul Fazl Md Sanaullah said that the EC made the decision after reviewing all legal aspects and court directives.
‘The party will get back both its registration and symbol,’ he said.
He said that the registration process would begin soon, though returning the electoral symbol might take a little longer due to official procedures.
This move came after the Supreme Court’s June 1 ruling overturning the High Court’s 2013 verdict declaring Jamaat’s registration illegal.
The court directed the EC to resolve all remaining matters related to the party’s status and constitution.
Jamaat had applied for the return of its scales symbol, which it originally received when it was registered in 2008.
The EC considered the situation before the 2013 verdict when the party held both registration and symbol.
Sanaullah said that Jamaat’s electoral symbol, the scales, was cancelled in 2016 based on a decision made in a full court meeting.
He explained that the cancellation came as an administrative directive, which the Election Commission at the time received through the Registrar.
Sanaullah mentioned that there was an appeal in the past aiming to stop the use of the scales as a political symbol, as it was seen to represent justice.
But the court had rejected the appeal, noting that its use in elections would not affect the court’s dignity.
