A group of students besieged the Shahbagh police station on Sunday, demanding justice for the killing of Shahriar Alam Shammo who was a student of Dhaka University and also a leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.

The students under the banner of ‘Bangladesher Sadharon Chhatrasamaj’ (general students of Bangladesh) first staged a sit-in at the base of the Raju Memorial Sculpture on the Dhaka University campus at about 11:00am and then marched towards the Shahbagh police station and besieged it for over an hour.


University vice-chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan and proctor Saifuddin Ahmed also joined the sit-in, expressing solidarity with their demand for the immediate arrest and trial of the culprits.

‘We have taken all necessary steps and are continuing our efforts to arrest Shammo’s killers and ensure a speedy trial. Please remain patient.’ Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan called on the students.Ìý

After the sit-in, the students, marching to the police station, laid siege to it from about 12.30pm when they had their representatives had a meeting with the police officers regarding their progress in the murder probe.ÌýÌý

On the day, leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal also staged a protest, blocking the Shahbagh crossing near the DU campus from about 3:45pm for nearly two hours, demanding justice for Shammo’s killing.

Shammo, a 25-year-old student of the 2018–19 academic session at DU’s Institute of Education and Research, and also publication secretary of JCD’s AF Rahman Hall unit, was stabbed to death by miscreants inside Suhrawardy Udyan in the early hours of May 13.

During the Sunday’s blockade, JCD activists blamed the authorities alleging negligence in the murder probe.

JCD leaders and activists from its Dhaka University, Jagannath University, Dhaka College, Titumir College and other units took part in the demonstrations, triggering traffic gridlock in and around the Shahbagh crossing.

JCD central president Rakibul Islam Rakib and general secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir took part in the blockade.

Earlier in the day at about 1:00pm, activists of the organisation’s Dhaka University unit staged a black flag procession on the campus and a short rally, demanding justice for Shammo’s killing.

They also sought resignation of DU vice-chancellor Niaz Ahmed and proctor Saifuddin Ahmed, alleging administrative negligence.

At the rally, its DU unit president Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos said, ‘The university administration cannot deny their responsibility for the murder.’

The teachers belonging to the pro-Bangladesh Nationalist party teachers’ platform White Panel formed a human chain about noon at the base of Aparajeyo Bangla, demanding justice for the killing.Ìý

They also issued a 48-hour ultimatum to identify and arrest the ‘real killer’ of Shammo.

Earlier on Wednesday, the police detained three youths in Green Road and Rajabazar areas in connection with Shammo’s killing.
