A 48-hour ultimatum to arrest the killers of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a Dhaka University student, is going to be expired at 12 noon today amid ongoing protests by the students.
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, is going to hold a rally in the Shahbagh area today protesting at the negligence in the investigation, demanding arrest of those involved, exemplary punishment through fair trial and a safe campus.
A Dhaka court, meanwhile, on Saturday placed three individuals on six-day remand each in connection with the killing of Shahriar.
Shahriar, a student of the Institute of Education and Research and also a leader of the DU unit JCD, died in an attack by miscreants in the Suhrawardy Udyan area on the night of May 13.
On May 14, the police arrested three people in connection with the killing and a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court sent them to jail. The arrested people were identified as ‘outsiders’ by the police.
The accused are Md Tamim Howlader, 30, Palash Sardar, 30, and Samrat Mallick, 28.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Shahin Reza passed the order after the police produced them before the court seeking 10-day remand for them.
Under the banner of Bangladesher Shadharon Chhatra Samaj, a group of students on Friday afternoon gave the authorities a 48-hour ultimatum to arrest the killers of Shahriar.
The protesting students said that even after 72 hours of the incident, the law enforcement agencies could not arrest the persons who stabbed Shahriar.
They also laid siege to the Shahbagh police station for about one and a half hours on Friday and threatened to announce a tougher movement tomorrow if the perpetrators were not arrested within 48 hours.
A press release, issued by the JCD on Saturday, read that the organisation would hold a protest rally in front of the National Museum today for Shahriar.
The JCD also demanded the resignation of the university vice-chancellor, Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan, and proctor Saifuddin Ahmed for their failure to ensure safety and security of the students on the campus.
DU authorities also declared May 15 as a mourning day and suspended classes and examinations till 1:00pm on the day over the death of Shahriar.
A section of students, however, boycotted classes and examinations for full day on the day.
The university authorities on May 14 formed a seven-member committee to probe the death.
