At least 12 people, including a child and three farmers, were killed by lightning strikes and fallen trees during nor’wester in five districts on Sunday. 

The districts are Brahmanbaria, Kishoreganj, Chapainawabganj, Habiganj and Mymensingh.


The incidents of lightning strikes took place between 3:00pm and 5:30pm on the day.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Brahmanbaria reported that five people were killed in separate lightning strikes at Akhaura, Sarail and Nasirnagar upazilas in the district at noon.

The deceased are Abdur Razzak , 35, from village Kaligachha of Sarail upazila,  Samsul Huda, 35, from village Gukarna, Jakia Begum, 8, from village Durgapur of Nasirnagar upazila and Selim Miah, 60, from village Ruti and Jamir Khan, 22, son of Madan Khan from village of Bangaj of Akhaura upazila.

Akhaura police officer-in-charge Md Somiuddin and Nasirnagar police officer-in-charge Khairul Alam confirmed the incidents.

Deceased Selim Miah’s son Rubel Miah said, ‘My father was working in the paddy field, he died on the spot being struck by lightning at around 3.00pm.’   

In another incident, Jamir Khan was in the field with his cows when lightning struck him, said locals.

In Kishoreganj, three people were killed in separate lightning strikes at three places.

The deceased are – Faruk Mia, 50, son of Afsar Uddin Mia from Rasulpur village and Md Faisal Mia, 25, son of Yunus Mia from Srignagar village under Bhairab upazila and Kabir Mia, 25, son of Shafiqul Mia from Hazarinagar village under Kuliarchar upazila in the district.

Bhairab police officer-in-charge Md Helal Uddin and Kuliarchar police officer-in-charge Fuad Ruhani both said that the incidents took place at around 3:30pm.

In Chapainawabganj Md Kaimul, 40, a farmer from Bulonpur village under the sadar upazila died on the spot in a lightning strike while he was cutting paddy at around 3:00pm, said sadar upazila thana sub-inspector Shakil Hossain.

In Habiganj, Shaju Mia, 20, son of Tojum Ali from Demikandi village had been struck by lightning at around 5:30pm at Ajmiriganj upazila while taking a bath in a drain.

His parents rushed him to a nearby hospital while the doctor on duty declared him dead.

United News of Bangladesh reported that two people have died after trees fell on them following a nor’wester in Barera and Marakuri areas under Ghagra union in Mymensingh at around 4:00pm.

The incidents were confirmed by the Kotwali model police station officer-in-charge Md Shafiqul Islam Khan.

The deceased are - Sajib, 20, son of Abdul Majid of Barera area and Suruj Mia, 55, son of late Afsar Ali of Marakuri area.

Locals said that when the storm started Sajib took shelter under a tree and suddenly the tree fell on him, leaving him dead on the spot.

At the same time at Marakuri, Suruj was standing next to his house when a branch fell on his head, leaving him seriously injured.

Locals took him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

Shafiqul said that legal action was under way.
