National Citizen Party chief organiser for South Hasnat Abdullah on Friday morning announced a rally near chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus’s official residence Jamuna in the capital after Jumma prayers demanding trial of Awami League and ban on its political activities.
The announcement came from the on-going sit-in programme in front Jamuna which began on Thursday night.
Hasnat called on people from all walks of life and the July uprising forces to participate the rally.
He said that construction of a stage in front of the fountain near Jamuna had begun.
On Thursday night, several hundred students and people began a sit-in programme in front of Jamuna demanding trial of AL and ban on its political activities hours after former Bangladesh president Abdul Hamid left Bangladesh for Thailand.
They started gathering in front of Jamuna after 10:30pm after Hasnat on his verified Facebook profile announced the sit-in programme.
Students, injured people in July uprising, leaders and activists of different political parties and organisations, including the National Citizen Party, Inquilab Mancha, United People’s Bangladesh, Amar Bangladesh Party, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Bangladesh Islami Chhatrashibir, Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami were present during the demonstration.
Addressing the sit-in, NCP convener Nahid Islam said that the first duty of the interim government was to ban the AL.
‘But today, after nine months, we have had to take to the streets again demanding ban on AL,’ said Nahid.
Huge number of law enforcing members were seen in front of Jamuna to maintain security in the area.
