
A theatrical performance titled ‘Songs of Hawkers’ enthralled an audience on Thursday at Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Songs of Hawkers, a production of Alliance Française de Dhaka, was directed by French playwright Zazie Hayoun.
The play is comprised of three stories of hawkers.
The comedy, performed in English and Bangla, used dance, song, puppetry, acrobatics and clowning and made funny moments with the mistakes of the characters.
‘I have always been passionate about life in public space and how urbanisation is reinventing itself through human actions,’ said Zazie Hayoun.
The first part of the play titled The Secret depicts a story of a doctor who solves a problem of a king and also discovers a hidden princess from an ordinary old woman.Â
The Thief Rewarded, second part of the story, shows a female thief stealing ornaments from a street hawker but a corrupted policeman falls in love with the thief and misjudges the hawker.
The last part of the play highlighted the livelihood of hawkers on the streets, especially their competition of selling goods to the customers.  Â
The play was performed by four actors namely Imam Hossain, M S Rana, P K Fazal and Suraiya T Mou portrayed different characters on stage.
Zazie Hayoun also wrote two songs for the play composed by Gopi Debnath while choreography music was composed by Rahul Ananda. Farhad A Shamim choreographed the movements and Mukhlesur Rahman designed light for the production.
The second show of the production will be held today at the same venue.
