Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday raised alarm that individuals who collaborated with the Pakistani forces during the 1971 Liberation War, including those involved in killing freedom fighters, are now being rehabilitated in the country.
Obliquely hinting at the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Fakhrul said that a deliberate attempt was being made to erase the memories and significance of Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War, which must be strongly resisted.
‘Today, there is a deliberate attempt to erase the memory of the 1971 Liberation War and portray it so that nothing had happened, as if we made no contribution to the nation, and that history began in 2024,’ he resented.
‘We must resist this distortion,’ Fakhrul said while addressing a meeting with freedom fighters at the district Muktijoddha Complex in Thakurgaon.
On the upcoming national elections, Mirza Fakhrul warned against any attempt to delay or derail the polls.
‘There are efforts to postpone or sabotage the elections. If that happens, it will bring disaster not only for us but for the entire country. Please, do not delay the elections even by a single day,’ he said.
The event was presided over by freedom fighter Nur Karim, convener of the Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, Thakurgaon district unit command.
Among others, Naeem Jahangir, Sadeq Ahmed Khan, former state minister Monsur Ali Sarkar, district unit BNP president Mirza Foysal Amin, and general secretary Poigam Ali spoke at the event.
