Supporters of Bangladesh Nationalist Party nomination aspirants continued protests at places across the country on Wednesday.
Earlier on Monday, the party named its possible candidates for the forthcoming nation election, expected to be held by mid-February in 2026, for 237 parliamentary constituencies.
Protesters staged demonstrations in Chandpur, Kushtia, Munshiganj, Tangail and Madaripur on Wednesday, demanding that the party should reconsider the selections for their respective constituencies for the forthcoming national election.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Munshiganj reported that followers of former Srinagar upazila BNP president Momin Ali and central leader Sharafat Ali Sopu staged a demonstration rejecting the party’s preliminary selection for Munshiganj-1 constituency.
They brought out a procession from Dakbangla area at about 11:00am, marched through different roads and ended with a rally in Dakbangla area.
During the demonstration, the protesters demanded reconsideration of the nomination for the constituency.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Kushtia reported that a BNP faction in Kushtia-4 constituency held a press conference and brought out a procession in Kumarkhali’s Holbazar area, warning that the party would face a crushing defeat in the coming election if the nomination for the constituency was not revised.
At the press conference, they claimed that nominated candidate Syed Mehedi Ahmed Rumi was inactive there for the past 17 years and was disconnected from the people, while Nurul Islam Ansar Pramanik had long served the party and people, standing by them through repression, attacks and harassment through legal means.
After the press conference, several hundred party activists brought out a protest procession that marched through different areas before blocking the Kushtia–Rajbari regional highway at Kumarkhali crossing, causing traffic disruption for some time.
In Chandpur-4 constituency, agitated supporters of Faridganj upazila BNP convener MA Hannan staged demonstration near the Faridganj municipality bus stand by setting fire on tires and blocking the Faridganj-Raipur road demanding Hannan’s nomination for the constituency.
They demanded reconsidering the nomination for the constituency for which the party primarily selected Harunur Rashid.
In Tangail-3 constituency, followers of BNP chairperson’s adviser Lutfor Rahman Khan Azad staged a rally in the morning at Ghatail upazila demanding his nomination.
Protesters said that the leaders and activists of the upazila would continue protests till the nomination of the announced one would change.
The party’s preliminary selection for Tangail-3 constituency is SM Obaidul Haque Nasir.
Meanwhile, supporters of Kamal Zaman Molla, whose nomination for Madaripur-1 constituency was suspended on Tuesday amid local protests, brought out a procession and held a rally in Shibchar municipality in the morning, demanding the withdrawal of the suspension.
The BNP on Monday announced a list of its potential candidates for 237 constituencies in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad elections, while supporters of several nomination aspirants started staging demonstrations blocking highways and roads at places since the announcement.
