Politicians, academics, and professionals on Saturday said that the interim government should function as a caretaker administration before the next general election and must remove the advisers who have become controversial for their roles in the interim government.
They made the remarks at a discussion organised by the Bhashani Janashakti Party, a partner of Ganatantra Mancha, at the National Press Club in the capital.
They demanded that the next general election must be held in February in a free, fair and credible manner.
Addressing the discussion, Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said that the next general election must be held in the first half of next February in a free, fair and credible manner.
For this, the interim government must act neutrally and remove the advisors who have become controversial for their roles in the government, he said.
Moreover, some political parties were raising new issues before the election and holding protest programmes, which would delay the election, the BNP leader said.
He called on the political parties to include the demands in their election manifesto and people would give their verdicts on the issues, Amir Khasru said.
Jatiya Party faction chairman Mostafa Jamal Haider said that the political parties should continue their unity until holding a free, fair and credible general election.
Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Huq said that the people were eagerly waiting to apply their voting rights in the upcoming general election.
Dhaka University professor Mahbubur Rahman said that the people were waiting for a democratic transition, which would be possible through the next general election.
Presided over by Bhashani Janashakti Party chairman Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu, the discussion was addressed, among others, by Bangladesh Rashtra Sanskar Andolan chairman Hasnat Quaiyum and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD senior vice president Tania Rob.
