A faction of the Jatiya Party on Thursday demanded that the next general election, which the government plans to hold in February next year, be delayed until the environment for holding the polls is improved.

The faction chairman Anisul Islam Mahmud made the demand at a joint meeting of the party’s central committee and Dhaka north and south city units at its central office in the capital’s Gulshan area.

He said that an appropriate environment for holding the next general election had not created so far and problems would increase if national polls were held now.

Anisul said that the law and order situation had deteriorated, the economic condition had worsened, the prices of essential commodities had increased, and mob culture continued in the country.

In this backdrop, he said, the government should consider whether it is possible to hold a free, fair, credible, and participatory election.

‘We will participate in the next general election after creating a suitable atmosphere after February,’ Anisul said.

The faction secretary general ABM Ruhul Amin Hawalder congratulated the Chhatra Shibir panel for winning the September 9 elections to the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union.

The party faction’s executive chairman Mujibul Haque Chunnu, senior co-chairman Kazi Firoz Rashid, and central leaders Shahidur Rahman Tepa, Nasrin Jahan Ratna, Liakat Hossain Khoka, and Jahirul Islam Jahir, among others, also spoke.
