Attorney general Md Asaduzzaman said on Saturday that he would look into the legal aspects for banning the Jatiya Party.Â
Speaking at the inauguration of a regional office for the National University in Jhenaidah, Asaduzzaman said, ‘I will look into the legal basis for banning the Jatiya Party.’
He condemned the attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad president Nurul Haque Nur, which occurred during clashes between activists of his party and the Jatiya Party.
He called the attack a part of a larger conspiracy.
He added that the Jatiya Party, an ally of the Awami League, activities of which have now been banned until trial of the party activists and leaders for their atrocities during the July mass uprising, had supported the ousted government during the student-led mass uprising in 2024.
He questioned why the Jatiya Party wasn’t banned for its alleged role in those incidents and in controversial elections since 1982.
Asaduzzaman said the attack on Nur was not an isolated incident, but a part of a larger plot, calling it a condemnable and criminal act.
Nurul Haque Nur was hospitalised after being injured in a violent clash between activists of his party and the Jatiya Party on Friday night.
According to Dhaka Medical College Hospital Director Brigadier General Md Assaduzzaman, Nur suffered a head injury and a nasal fracture, leading to heavy bleeding.
His condition was still critical, and doctors would continue to monitor him for the next 48 hours, he said on Saturday afternoon.
Gono Odhikar Parishad leader Abu Hanif confirmed that Nur was still in critical condition and being treated at the hospital on Saturday evening.
