Jatiya Party split for the seventh time on Saturday as a council loyal to senior leader Anisul Islam Mahmud elected a new central committee of the party.
The new central committee was announced through holding the 10th national conference with participation of the followers of Anisul from across the country, held at a community centre at Gulshan in the capital.
The council elected Anisul Islam Mahmud and ABM Ruhul Amin Hawlader as the party鈥檚 chair and secretary general respectively.
Kazi Firoz Rashid was elected as senior co-chair and former secretary general Mujibul Haque Chunnu as the executive chair of the party.
Asked, Jahirul Islam Jahir, convener of the party election commission, told 抖阴精品 that two thousand party councillors and delegates from across the country took part in the council and elected the central committee in a voice vote.
However, followers of GM Quader did not聽 participate in the council terming it as an 鈥榠llegal council鈥.
Mujibul Haque Chunnu sought forgiveness from the people for his party鈥檚 taking part in the controversial general elections during the Awami League rule.
The latest rift follows the Dhaka First Joint District Judge Court鈥檚 imposition on July 31 of a temporary injunction on Jatiya Party chair GM Quader, barring him from engaging in political activities.
The ban concerned a case filed over 鈥榰ndue party influence鈥 wielded by GM Quader and joint office secretary Mahmud Alam.
Soon after, a faction of senior leaders had appointed Anisul Islam Mahmud as acting chair at a presidium meeting on Tuesday.
Mujibul Haque Chunnu and Anisul Islam, among 10 leaders, filed a case with the court alleging that they were expelled by party chair GM Quader violating the party鈥檚 constitution on July 7.
Some pro-Anisul senior leaders of the party faction on Friday had announced that the party鈥檚 10th national council session would be held on Saturday.
After opening the 10th national conference hoisting national and party flags, Anisul Islam Mahmud chaired the opening session.
Anisul said that for the implementation of reform proposals brokered by the interim government an elected parliament would be required.
So the interim government should hold the next general elections as early as possible with the consensus of political parties in free, fair and credible manner.
Jatiya Party-JP faction chair Anwar Hossain Monju also participated in the council and said in the opening session that the interim government had failed to restore the law and order in the country in their one-year rule.
鈥榃e want to establish a 鈥渘ew Bangladesh鈥 in the spirit of the liberation war in 1971,鈥 Monju said, adding that the country was going through a mob culture and the government had failed to ensure safety and security of the people.
Central leaders Syed Abu Hossain Babla, ATU Taj Rahman, Nazma Akhter Liakat Hossain Khoka, and others spoke in the opening session.
Earlier, in March 2024, the party split for the sixth time, as Raushan Ershad and GM Quader, brother of Earshad, could not come to an agreement over the party鈥檚 debacle in the national election.
Raushan formed a separate committee, while Quader declared himself the party chair.
Following Ershad鈥檚 death on July 14, 2019, a conflict erupted between his widow Raushan Ershad and his younger brother GM Quader over the position of party chair.
Raushan Ershad declared herself party chair and formed a separate committee, appointing Kazi Mamunur Rashid as the secretary general.
Later, factions of Raushan and GM Quader, after several meetings, came to an understanding that Quader would remain the chair while Raushan would be the opposition leader.
The fifth split occurred in 2013 after a special council meeting. Former prime minister Kazi Zafar Ahmed announced the formation of the new Jatiya Party through a special council meeting. That party is currently led by Mustafa Jamal Haider.
Before the 2001 parliamentary elections, Ershad joined the grand alliance with the AL and the party split for the fourth time when a portion led by then secretary general Naziur Rahman Manzu remained in the four-party alliance led by the BNP.
The party faced its third split in 1999 when HM Ershad left the four-party alliance, resulting in the formation of another faction.
In 1996, the JP split for second time when Anwar Hossain Manju contested elections under the Awami League. Manju then formed the Jatiya Party with AL backing.
The first division in the party occurred in the 1990s following Ershad鈥檚 fall from power. Then, a non-party caretaker government, led by then chief justice Shahabuddin Ahmed, was formed on December 6, 1990.
Subsequently, HM Ershad was arrested and, in his absence, Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury took over the charge of the Jatiya Party as acting chair.聽 In 1991, another split occurred as Huda-Matin broke away from the party and formed Jatiya Party (Nationalism Movement), but it did not survive.
According to the EC guidelines, the deadline for holding the JP鈥檚 10th national council was June 30.
Military dictator HM Ershad founded the party in 1985 and he was the chair of it until his death on July 14, 2019.
