National Citizen Party convener Nahid Islam on Sunday said that some political parties were now seeking a national election and power but the NCP was firm in their demand that the polls should be held after reforms in various sectors, trial of fascists and formulating a new constitution.
Nahid made the remarks while addressing a rally at Central Shaheed Minar in Pirojpur district town on the 13th day of the party’s countrywide march to mark the first anniversary of the July uprising.
‘We made a call to rebuild the country after the mass uprising. But, many did not respond to the call. Some want only power, only an election. They did not consider reforms as necessary,’ he said.
‘But, we have said that we want reforms, trial of fascist Awami League and a new constitution to rebuild the country… We want to reconstruct the country’s economy and culture,’ he said.
‘We do not want to go back to the old settlement, old corrupt system, old mafia system,’ said Nahid.
Nahid is also a former central leader of Students Against Discrimination that spearheaded the July uprising to oust the Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.
He said that the youths, for whom people took to the streets and sacrificed their lives, had responsibilities to continue the struggle to carry out fundamental reforms to rebuild the country.
He urged all to work for an end to discrimination in society.
NCP leaders and activists brought out a procession from Pirojpur Circuit House amid rain and the procession ended at the Central Shaheed Minar of the town where they held the brief rally.
NCP member secretary Akhter Hossain, senior joint convener Samanta Sharmeen and senior joint member secretary Tasnim Jara, among others, joined the processions and rallies in Pirojpur and Jhalakathi districts.
The NCP is scheduled to hold processions in all the districts till July 30, demanding the trial of the Awami League and its leaders for the massacres during the mass uprising, reforms in various sectors, and a new constitution aiming at building a discrimination-free Bangladesh.
The party leaders and activists will hold processions and rallies in Patuakhali and Barguna districts today.
