The National Citizen Party on Saturday said that the national election must be held after the trial of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and the leaders and activists of the fascist Awami League for committing massacre during the July-August uprising and fundamental reforms in various sectors.
The party convener, Nahid Islam, made the remarks while addressing a meeting with the family members of the July uprising martyrs at the Parjatan Motel in Bogura as part of the party’s ongoing programmes to mark the first anniversary of the uprising that ousted the Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.
‘We will ensure trial of the Awami League, Sheikh Hasina, and the police personnel who shot and killed our brothers and sisters on this soil,’ Nahid said.
Nahid, also a former central leader of the Students Against Discrimination that spearheaded the July uprising, said that a quarter made money by filing uprising-related cases while the police let the perpetrators go, and the courts granted bail for the accused persons in the cases linked to the mass uprising.
‘Some are saying that the trials will take much time. But, it must be begun and made visible. A roadmap for trials must be given and any party, that will form the government, can obstruct the trial process,’ said the NCP leader.
The NCP began the march on July 1 from Rangpur by offering prayers to uprising martyr Abu Sayed as part of its July 1-August 5 countrywide programme to mark the first anniversary of the uprising.
A group of student and youth leaders who led the uprising formed the NCP on February 28.
Nahid said that the July Declaration must be incorporated into the constitution.
‘The state must ensure political, social and economic security to the July uprising injured and family members of the martyrs,’ he demanded.
Addressing a rally at Bogura Satmatha Mor after the meeting, Nahid alleged that the civil administration of Bogura was not showing impartial behaviour.
He threatened the administration and reminded them of the consequences for government officials involved in electoral fraud in the 2018 national election.
Addressing the same rally, NCP member secretary Akhter Hossain said that some fundamental reforms were compulsory to ensure power balance in the new Bangladesh and the July Charter must be made based on such reforms.
‘The new Bangladesh will not be left to run by any fascist or extortionist,’ said Akhter.
On the fifth day of the party’s countrywide programmes, NCP leaders including the party’s chief organiser for North Sarjis Alam, chief organiser for South Hasnat Abdullah, chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, senior joint member secretary Tasnim Jara and joint convener Anik Roy, among others, participated in the marches and rallies in Bogura, Joypurhat and Naogaon.
The NCP is scheduled to hold marches in all districts till July 30, demanding the trial of the Awami League and its leaders for the massacres during the mass uprising, reforms in various sectors, and a new constitution aiming at building a discrimination-free Bangladesh.
The party leaders and activists will hold marches and rallies in Chapainawabganj and Rajshahi districts today.   Â
