Students and people will not accept the next national election before the completion of fundamental reforms in various sectors and they will resist the election without reforms, said the Students Against Discrimination president on Friday.

SAD president Rifat Rashid made the remarks at the capital’s Rayerbazar Graveyard while inaugurating the platform’s month-long programme by offering prayers for the July uprising martyrs marking its first anniversary.

Answering questions from journalists, Rifat said, ‘There is no chance of holding elections without reforms. If anyone thinks that the elections will be held without reforms, students and people will resist it.’

SAD spearheaded the July uprising that ousted the Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.

Rifat stated that a zero-tolerance policy would be taken regarding fundamental reforms and the elections will not be allowed to take place before ensuring the reforms.

If political parties think that they are the only policymakers and there exist no other voices, then they are making mistakes, said Rifat, adding that the mass uprising in July occurred because of the failure of the political parties.

Thousands of students and people took to the streets with a dream for a new Bangladesh by abolishing the old political settlement and the dream must be fulfilled, said Rifat.

SAD general secretary Hasan Enam, senior vice-president MJH Monju, spokesperson Sinthiya Zaheen Ayesha, organisational secretary Moinul Islam and others were present at the event.
