
The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Saturday unveiled a series of nationwide events to commemorate the first anniversary of the 2024 July–August mass uprising that forced the ouster of the authoritarian regime of Sheikh Hasina on August 5 in the year.
The programme, which will run from July 1 to August 8, was formally announced at the party central office by secretary general Mia Golam Porwar.
The commemorative events will begin on July 1 with special prayer sessions at all organisational units for those who were martyred, injured, or permanently disabled in the uprising.
From July 2 to 4, the party will distribute food for poor, destitute and orphans.
Between July 8 and 15, Jamaat leaders will meet with families of those killed or injured in the movement, holding discussions, and offering prayers in their memory.
On July 16, a commemorative event and prayer session will be held in Rangpur in honour of Shaheed Abu Sayeed.Â
A rally will be held on July 19 at the Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital Dhaka, where the party will press for the implementation of its previously announced seven-point demand.
The same day, Jamaat Amir will attend a separate event organised by families of martyred in the uprising.
From July 20 to 24, seminars and symposiums will be held across the country, followed by documentary screenings and cultural programmes from July 25 to 28.
On July 29 and 30, women and female students will host special discussion sessions.
On August 1, a national seminar on ‘Shaheed Smarak’ (Martyrs’ Memorial) will be held, with English and Arabic translations of the discussions provided.
From August 1 to 3, student groups of the Jamaat will organise a photography exhibition themed on the uprising.
The party will bring out nationwide mass processions on August 5 and will take part in both national and local-level events.
The programme will conclude with a series of discussions from August 6 to 8, led by professionals, including journalists, teachers, doctors, lawyers, engineers, and Islamic scholars.
