Bangladesh Nationalist Party activists in Rajshahi city detained a leader of Awami League, which is banned from running activities until trial of its leaders and activists for atrocities perpetrated during the July uprising is finished, and handed him over to the police on Friday night.
The detainee, Mainul Islam Swapan, 55, is the president of Tanore upazila Awami League.
Witnesses said that a group of BNP activists gathered in front of a residential hotel beside the Boro Majid area at Saheb Bazar Zero Point in Rajshahi city at 10:00pm Friday, suspecting that Mainul was hiding inside.
Contacted, Rajshahi metropolitan BNP convener Ershad Ali Esha said that he heard that some AL members were holding a secret meeting at the hotel.
On information, local people surrounded the hotel, detained Mainul and handed him over to the police, he said, adding that there was no mob.
‘The police arrested him and took him away. Our party activists have been instructed not to create any kind of mob, and no such incident happened in Rajshahi,’ he said.
Mostak Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Boalia Model Police, said that there was no case filed against Mainul with the police station.
‘We arrested him as an unnamed suspect in a case filed with our police station over attacking a student-led procession during the July uprising, and sent him to jail through a court,’ he added.
