Left student organisations on Sunday condemned recent attacks on and threats to left student leaders and activists during demonstrations in Rajshahi and Chattogram rejecting the Supreme Court’s May 27 verdict acquitting Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam of 1971 war crimes charges.
At least 20 left student leaders and activists were injured when the demonstrations of the Democratic Students’ Alliance, a combine of seven left student organisations, came under attack on the Rajshahi University campus on May 27 and in front of Chattogram Press Club on May 28.

Akash was sent to jail on the day after he was produced before a Chattogram court in a police case filed over Chattogram attack, said Kotwali police officer-in-charge Abdul Karim.
Bangladesh Students’ Union, meanwhile, at a press conference at Dhaka University on Sunday alleged that activists of Jamaat and its student body Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir threatened the leaders of the organisation as they continued their demonstrations protesting at the acquittal.
BSU general secretary Shimul Kumar, also known as Shimul Kumbhkar, filed a general dairy with the Shahbagh police station on the day over provocative posts and threats to him and his family on social media platforms, Shahbagh police officer-in-charge Md Khalid Mansur told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
BSU president Tamzid Haider Chanchol alleged that victims of such threats also included the organisation’s vice-president Monisha Wahid and school student affairs secretary Akramul Haque Jihad. Â
Condemning the attacks in Rajshahi and Chattogram, Tamzid demanded immediate arrest of the attackers and bringing the persons involved in threatening the left leaders to book.
Democratic Students’ Alliance on Sunday also issued a statement condemning the attacks on and threats to the left student leaders and their family members.
