Protesters, including students, leaders and activists of different political groups, have taken the interim government’s decision of banning all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League positively.
They would remain vigilant during implementation of the government decisions taken on Saturday night, said National Citizen Party chief organiser for South Hasnat Abdullah on early Sunday, urging all protesters, who were blocking the Shahbagh crossing, to return their homes until further announcement.
Hasnat made the remarks at Shahbagh during suspending the protest demonstrations. A celebration rally will be organised after the government publishes a gazette notification in this regard on Monday.Â
A group of July uprising injured protesters disagreed to withdraw the blockade and decided to continue the demonstration until they take a decision after discussing with more injured protesters on Sunday.
The interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus on Saturday night banned all activities of AL, following days of mounting protests led by student groups and political activists under the banner of Anti-fascist National Unity demanding action against the party’s alleged role in past atrocities.
Hasnat said, ‘Banning Awami League declaring it a terrorist organisation, incorporating a provision into the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act to enable the trial of Awami League as a party and issuing July charter were the demands of the anti-fascist students and people.’
Protesters have taken the government’s decisions regarding the demands positively, said Hasnat.
‘All activities of the Awami League has been banned with the government decision,’ said Hasnat adding that there was no provision in the ICT Act to try AL as a party but the provision had been incorporated now.
Hasnat said that the decisions were not enough as people had experienced lack of interest and delay in trying AL leaders and issuing the July charter.
He demanded reforms in the tribunal and a clear road map for issuing the July charter.
Moreover, Hasnat asked the government to clarify its position regarding AL-led 14-party alliance.
He also stated that the forces of July uprising might have different opinions but had unity regarding the issue of AL, that was ousted through mass uprising on August 5, 2024.
Earlier, demonstrators, led by National Citizen Party leaders Nahid Islam and Hasnat, first gathered outside the Chief Adviser’s residence on May 8 before moving to Shahbagh, a hub of political mobilisation in Dhaka.
Students, people injured in the July uprising, leaders and activists of different political parties and organisations, including National Citizen Party, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Jamaat-e-Islami, Hefazat-e Islam Bangladesh, Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, Islami Chhatra Andolan Bangladesh, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, Inquilab Mancha, Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad, and Amar Bangladesh Party, participated in the demonstrations.
