The Anti-Corruption Commission on Monday decided to launch inquiries against former state minister for disaster management and relief Enamur Rahman and former Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation chairman Md Haiul Quaium over allegations of amassing illegal wealth.
The commission took the decision for inquiries as its intelligence unit found primary proofs of the graft allegations against the two people, said the agency’s deputy director for public relations Aktarul Islam.
According to the allegations, Enamur Rahman, also a former lawmaker of the Dhaka-19 constituency, acquired a huge amount of illegal wealth through various irregularities, corruption and misuse of power.
Among Enamur’s assets that have been traced are Tk 43.54 lakh bank deposits; deposits in financial institutions worth Tk 1.33 crore; and investments in shares of various companies worth Tk 3.79 crore.
Besides, crores of taka has been invested in Enam Medical Hospital Private Limited, Enam Education and Industrial Village (Pvt.) Limited, and Enam Cancer Hospital Limited, according to the allegations.
The anti-corruption commission also decided to run inquiries against former Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation chairman Md Haiul Quaium over the allegations of amassing a huge amount of wealth through misuse of power since his joining the post. Haiul Quaium was also the deputy commissioner of Brahmanbaria district in 2009–2010.
According to the anti-corruption intelligence unit findings, the value of his immovable assets is Tk 4.60 crore. After meeting the family expenses with his job savings, amassing assets of that worth was not possible at all, said the commission officials, adding that Haiul Quaium amassed wealth beyond known sources of income.
