Leaders of Ganatantra Mancha, a combine of six political parties, on Saturday, called on the people to join movements against the Awami League government, which they claimed remained in power after holding a dummy election on January 7.

Speaking at the divisional representative meeting at the Umesh Chandra Library auditorium in Khulna city, they criticised the government for failing to create job opportunities and for closing 26 nationalised jute mills and six sugar mills, leaving thousands of workers jobless.

The meeting was chaired by Khan Lokman Hakim, Khulna city president of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD.

Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Huq announced that the opposition parties would wage movements to compel the government to resign.

Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki criticised the government for closing state-owned jute mills and failing to fulfil their promise to reopen the factories.

Bhashani Onusari Parishad convener Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu, Rastra Sanskar Andolan chief coordinator Hasnat Quaiyum, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD general secretary Shahid Uddin Mahmud Shapon and Nagarik Oikya central leader Mohiduzzaman Mohid and local leaders of Ganatantra Mancha spoke at the meeting.
