Artists have depicted the heritage and culture of Bangladesh’s capital in the group art exhibition titled ‘Dhaka: Told and Untold Story’ under way at Zainul Gallery of Dhaka University.

The exhibition, organised by artists’ group Ponchom, has been curated by Md Rashed Kamal. It features 30 artworks by 23 artists belonging to the fifth batch of Dhaka University fine art faculty.


Shamsunnahar Nasrin, Shareyar Russell, Abdus Sattar Toufiq, Suman Basak, Urmila Shukla, Farhana Akhter Shapna, Md Mohidul Hassan, Mohammad Golam Mostofa, Rania Alam and Habiba Akther Papia, among others, have displayed their artworks in the exhibition, which was inaugurated on August 29.

The seven-day exhibition comprises acrylic paintings, prints, sculptures, tapestries, digital art, drawings and watercolour on paper artworks.

Rania Alam’s collagraph print titled ‘Grave of Poribibi- Dhaka Lalbagh Kella’ depicts the architecture of Lalbagh Fort in Old Dhaka.

Md Mohidul Hassan’s watercolour artwork titled ‘People Searching Work in Dhaka City’ shows day labourers waiting for employers in the morning.

Farhana Akhter Shapna’s acrylic on canvas artwork titled ‘Streets of Heritage’ shows Old Dhaka’s iconic Beauty Lacchi shop.

Suman Basak’s digital artwork titled ‘Geni Pakhi Kak’ shows crows in Dhaka drinking water from a jar by elevating the water level with pebbles.

Shamsunnahar Nasrin’s tapestry titled ‘Shukh Dukkher Sadarghat’ depicts the Sadarghat river port area with chaos and colour.

‘Dhaka has lost its heritage and tradition due to the introduction of a new economy and culture. We did not preserve

Dhaka’s tradition, although it is a historical city. The exhibition explores the sorrow of a city,’ said Md Rashed Kamal.

The exhibition has been dedicated to legendary sculptor and painter Professor Hamiduzzaman Khan.

It will end on September 4.
