
Bangladeshi legendary sculptor and painter professor Hamiduzzaman Khan was remembered through a programme at ‘Hamiduzzaman Sculpture Park’ at Kodda in Gazipur on Wednesday.
The event titled ‘Prayers and Remembrance’ comprised the park tour, discussion and prayer sessions. It was organised by Ivy Zaman, widow of Hamiduzzaman, and the Summit Group.
Inaugurated in 2019 at the Summit Gazipur 464 MW Power Plants premises, the park boasts 86 sculptures and murals created with scraps and stones by Hamiduzzaman who died on July 20.
Renowned artist Nissar Hossain, Ivy Zaman, Zainul Abedin’s son Mainul Abedin and Summit Power Limited managing director retired Maj Gen Monirul Islam Akhand spoke at the event which was moderated by Mohsena Hassan.
Chairman of the sculpture department at the fine arts faculty of Dhaka University Nasimul Khabir Duke delivered the welcome speech while the founder chairman of Summit Group, Muhammed Aziz Khan, delivered a virtual speech at the event.
Praising the late artist, Nasimul said, ‘Hamiduzzaman Khan loved to work and his works were set in different buildings, industrial factories and public places while he also took initiatives to build his own sculpture garden.’  Â
Mainul Abedin said that not only a sculptor, Hamiduzzaman was one of the best watercolour painters in the country.
Nissar Hossain said that as an academic, Hamiduzzaman was an excellent teacher at the FFA and he received many international exposures as a sculptor of Bangladesh, who worked for different museums, galleries and private projects, and became an artist icon of the country.
Muhammed Aziz Khan said that Hamiduzzaman Khan’s sculptures reflect the history and culture of Bangladesh who created the sculptures of the park from metal scraps of the power plant.
‘Hamiduzzaman worked day and night here, creating and teaching us — how art is born from labour, how art elevates humanity,’ he said.
Ivy Zaman gave thanks to all who worked for the Sculpture Park and expressed gratitude to the Summit Group to lead the first sculpture park of the country.
Hamiduzzaman Khan was born on March 16, 1946, at Shohosram village near Gochihata in Katiadi under Kishoreganj district. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2006 and received a fellowship from Bangla Academy in 2023.
