A handful of cultural organisations in the country were attacked by miscreants after the resignation of the Awami League president Sheikh Hasina as prime minister on August 5 and fled to India amid a mass uprising spearheaded by students.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy public relations officer Sabina Yesmin said that at least 22 branches of the BSA were attacked after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina.

‘A total of 22 districts and upazila branches were attacked by miscreants, and the BSA complex was also burnt and looted,’ said Sabina Yesmin.

Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation acting secretary general Chandan Reza said that theatre troupes named Bogra Theatre and Shabdaboli Group Theatre in Barisal were attacked on the same day.

‘On August 5, miscreants set fire to our theatre office where costumes of 12 productions and stage properties of four theatre productions were stored,’ said Bogra Theatre secretary Toufique Hasan Moyna, adding that their many awards, certificates, crests, posters and other souvenirs of past 30 years were burnt.

They were collecting souvenirs of the War of Independence in Bogura to establish a memorial museum, and the collected souvenirs were destroyed in the attack, he said.

Toufique Hasan also mentioned that 10 theatre troupes of Gram Theatre, including Kahalu Theatre, Nagor Theatre, Adamdighi Theatre and Panchbibi Theatre, and Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigosthi Bogura office were attacked on the same day.

General secretary of Shabdaboli Group Theatre Mehedi Sajal said that miscreants broke two CCTV cameras and tried to break the main gate of the troupe on August 5.

Mentioning that local people prevented them, Mehedi said, ‘On August 7, some of them deleted the nameplates of the theatre in black colour. We will file a general diary when the police start their activity.’

General secretary of Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi Sunamganj, Jahangir Alam said that the Sunamganj Heritage Museum was also vandalised on the day of the resignation of Awami League president Sheikh Hasina.Â
