Academics, artists and writers said on Friday that poet, novelist, essayist and thinker Ahmed Sofa did not think of himself without relating him to the country and its people’s struggle.

They made the statement at a discussion titled Jagrata Ahmed Sofa organised by the Ahmed Sofa Rastrasabha to mark the writer’s 82nd anniversary of the birth at the Planers Tower at Bangla Motor in the capital Dhaka.

Writer and professor Salimullah Khan, renowned portrait photographer Nasir Ali Mamun, writer Md Nurul Anowar and Jatiya Kabita Parishad president Mohon Raihan spoke at the event moderated by film activist Zahirul Islam Kochi.

Writer of the book titled ‘Ahmed Sofar Somoy’, photographer Nasir Ali Mamun said that painter SM Sultan, writer Ahmed Sofa and educationist Abdur Razzak were his subjects of studies.

‘When I was interviewing Ahmed Sofa, he was feeding birds, singing and playing flutes and mentioned that he had learnt paintings to write about SM Sultan,’ Nasir Ali Mamun said, adding that it’s difficult to write a biography of Sofa.

Md Nurul Anowar said that Sofa wrote a book titled ‘Jagrata Bangladesh’ and he was now becoming popular day by day among young people of this country.

‘Ahmed Sofa observed people too consciously and he wrote most of his novels from his own experience and true events,’ said Anowar.

Mohon Raihan said that the youth accepted Ahmed Sofa because he endured the struggle for the birth of Bangladesh.

‘Ahmed Sofa wrote about the War of Independence as part of his own journey. He realised the pain of broken dreams of the freedom fighters during the tenure of post-war government,’ Mohon Raihan said, adding that the Rastrasabha would be able to introduce Ahmed Sofa to the younger generation of this country.

Salimullah Khan said that Ahmed Sofa wrote ‘Alat Chakra’ as not only a novel but also the future of Bangladesh.

‘We need to read his writings to know his political thoughts about Bangladesh because Ahmed Sofa never thought of himself without this country and its people’s struggle,’ he said.

Zahirul Islam Kochi said that they would announce a series of events to celebrate the birthday of Ahmed Sofa and the anniversary of student-led July uprising.

The July uprising ousted the authoritarian Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.
