India on Saturday pushed a couple into Bangladesh through a border point under Jaintapur upazila in Sylhet.

The Border Security Force of India pushed the couple into Bangladesh four days after they had pushed 16 individuals, including 13 Rohingyas, into Bangladesh through a border point under Baralekha upazila in Moulvibazar.

The number of people, including Rohingyas and Indian nationals, pushed into Bangladesh by the BSF since May 7 has crossed 2,100.

BGB 19 Battalion commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Zobayer Anowar said that the BSF pushed Hasanul Fakir, 58, of Madhabpur village under Dighalia upazila in Khulna and his wife Mosammat Ambia, 35, into Bangladesh through the Lalakhal-Baghchhara border point at about 12:45pm on Saturday.

He said that local residents confined the couple immediately after they were pushed into the Bangladesh territory and handed them over to the BGB.

Quoting the detainees, he said that they went to India, crossing the border about 10 years ago in search of jobs.

‘They were handed over to Jaintapur police station for taking legal steps against them,’ he said.
