The Indian Border Security Force shot a Bangladesh national to death on Friday, just two days after its chief at a director-general-level border conference in Dhaka on August 28 repeated promise to bring down the number of border killings to zero.

The BSF promised this during the 56th director general level meeting between the Border Guard Bangladesh and the BSF at the BGB headquarters in the capital Dhaka, between August 25 and August 28.


Four more Bangladesh national were also injured in the incident as the BSF opened fire on them near the Dona border point at Kanaighat in Sylhet Friday afternoon.

The deceased is Abdur Rahman, 40, of Aatgram Barachatol village of Lakshiprasad-Purba union under Kanaighat upazila, the police said.

Lakshiprasad-Purba union parishad member Nurul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Abdur Rahman and several others went to the Dona border point near Pillar number 1339 at about 4:00pm on Friday to bring Indian buffaloes.

‘Immediately after Abdur Rahman and his companions entered into the Indian territory, the BSF personnel opened fire on them, leaving Abdur Rahman dead on the spot and four others injured,’ he said.

He said that the injured people managed to flee the scene and returned to the country. They are Jamil Ahmed, Hussain Ahmed, Aminul Haque and Zumil Ahmed of the same union, he said. 

Local residents told reporters that the victim’s body was lying in the Indian side of the Dona border till 4:00pm on Saturday.

Kanaighat police station officer-in-charge Abdul Awal confirmed the incident of the border killing.

‘A team of the police, being informed by the BGB personnel, reached the spot and the process to bring back Abdur Rahman’s body from the BSF is underway,’ he said at about 4:30pm on Saturday.

At least 22 Bangladesh nationals were killed by the BSF in the first seven months of 2025.

According to human rights organisation Ain O Salish Kendra, at least 30 Bangladeshis were killed by the BSF in 2024 and 31 in 2023.

From January 2009 to November 2024, the BSF reportedly killed 588 Bangladeshis and injured 773 Bangladeshis, according to rights body Odhikar.
