The Rivers Dudhkumar and Tista devoured at least 55 houses and other infrastructure in Kurigram sadar and Rajarhat upazilas in the last three days till Wednesday.

River erosion victims took shelter in the house of others as well as under the open sky while about other 50 houses were under threat of river erosion.


Houses of at least 35 families from Baniapara village at the Dudkumari River basin under Jatrapur union in Kurigram Sadar upazila have been eroded since Monday.聽 At the area, at least 50 houses are also under the threat of river erosion.

Men, women and children of the area are now busy to remove their respective houses, household articles and to cut trees.

Housewife Monsona Begum of Baniapara village said that she went to her father鈥檚 house to see her sick mother. Hearing the erosion news she immediately returned home to see that her house including boundary wall, tube well etc. have already been washed away.

Bursting into tears, Monsona said that finding no alternative, she decided to go to her father鈥檚 house with her rest of the belongings and sons for shelter.

At least 16 houses and four semi pacca mosques have been washed away at Rajarhat upazila due to sudden rise of the water level of Tista River since Monday. About 5 acres of cropland have also been eroded and several hundreds of croplands are under threat. The river water that rose suddenly is receding now.

鈥淭he Dudhkumari River suddenly engulfed houses at Baniapara village鈥, said the Chairman of Jatrapur union Parishad Abdul Gafur. Kurigram Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ismail Hossain visited some spots and assured the victims for assistance after preparing a list. He also assured to take necessary measures to protect erosion.

Bangladesh Water Development Board鈥檚 Kurigram office executive engineer Rakibul Hasan said that G.O. bags were being placed in the Rive erosion point and the work is going on.

Around 2,000 hectares of crop land with standing crops, especially rice in Kurigram and Lalmonirhat districts remained inundated till Tuesday following recent heavy rainfall from the upstream in India and opening of the Gajoldoba barrage by the Indian authorities amid sudden rush of water from Sunday night.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre in its daily rainfall, river situation and forecast, issued at 9:00am on Wednesday, said that all the major rivers were flowing below their respective danger levels.

The water levels of the Ganges鈥揚adma rivers and Muhuri, Selonia and Feni rivers in the Chattogram division may continue to rise during the next three days.

The water levels of the Atrai, Mahananda, Jamuneswari, and Korotoa rivers in the Rajshahi division may continue to rise for the next day.
