Road communications with Khagrachhari district and other parts of the country remained suspended since Sunday morning following a landslide on a regional road in Rangamati due to heavy rain.

The BMD’s heavy rainfall warning reads that due to active Southwest monsoon, heavy (44–88mm in 24 hours) to very heavy (over 88mm in 24 hours) rainfall is likely to occur at many places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions during the next 72 hours commencing 2:00pm Sunday.

On the day, the flood forecasting centre in its warning said that in the next three days the water level of the river Teesta could cross the danger level.

The water levels of the rivers Dharla, Dudhkumar, Lubachhara, Sarigowain, Someshwari, Jadukata, Jhalukhali, Kongsho, Jinjiram and Bhugai may reach the warning level in the same period.

As a result, flood situation may occur in low-lying areas along the river basins in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Kurigram districts.

During this time, low lying areas along the rivers of Gaibandha, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Sherpur, Netrokona and Mymensingh districts may be temporarily flooded.

Meanwhile, United News of Bangladesh reported quoting locals that since Sunday morning the Baghaichhari-Dighinala road became covered with earth eroded from the adjacent hills due to overnight heavy rainfall, halting the traffic from dawn.

Maksudur Rahman, executive engineer at the Khagrachhari Roads and Highways Department, said efforts were underway to clear the road.

Baghaichhari upazila nirbahi officer Shirin Akter said that army and other agencies were working to remove the chunks of soil and to resume vehicular movement.

Subhuti Chakma, a weather officer at Dighinala, said on Sunday that they recorded 53mm rain in the last 24 hours till 10:00am.

Since Saturday night, intermittent rainfall has caused rivers and canals, including Chengi and Maini, to swell, with authorities urging residents living near vulnerable hillsides to stay alert.
