Low-lying areas in four northern districts may get flooded due to heavy to very heavy rainfall by today, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center’s special bulletin issued Tuesday afternoon.

The Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers may continue to rise over the next two days due to moderate to heavy rainfall in the basin, triggering flood within 24 hours in the low-lying areas of Rangpur, Nilphamari, Kurigram and Lalmonirhat.


The rivers in the Ganges basin may also keep swelling following days of continued rain in the basin over the next five days, according to the FFWC.

It sees no possibility of flood in the region.

All four maritime ports in Bangladesh remained under the instruction to keep hoisting signal number three for the Bay of Bengal continued to remain rough.

The depression in the Gangetic West Bengal and adjacent areas in Bangladesh weakened into a well-marked low as it moved away and was centered at 6:00pm on Tuesday over Jharkhand and adjoining areas.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department predicted rain in most places of Rangpur, Rajshahi and Khulna divisions today.

In the 24 hours until 6:00pm, the BMD said, Bangladesh’s highest rainfall of 145 mm was recorded in Tarash of Rajshahi. Dhaka recorded 41 mm of rainfall over the same period of time.

Parts of Feni and Noakhali still remained under water and a trail of destruction emerged as flood water receded from the districts following a sustained break in rainfall.

The monsoon this year arrived earlier than usual, so far sending a strong supply of moisture toward the land.

The BMD predicted that rainfall activities might pick up at the end of the week.

In the 24 hours until 9:00am on Tuesday, the FFWC said, 54 of the 127 water level gauging stations recorded a rise.
