Visual artist Liton Kar’s solo oil painting exhibition portraying female spiritual figures and expression is under way at Alliance Française de Dhaka at Dhanmondi in the capital.

The exhibition began on July 18 and will end on July 26.

The nine-day exhibition titled ‘She, the Universe - The Infinity Within Her’ is displaying 25 large sized surreal oil paintings with elements of acrylic, charcoal and sculpture, which also depicts women’s subconscious, dreams, emotions and identity.

The exhibition is self-curated by artist Liton Kar who did not mention any title of his paintings.

‘I try to communicate under the title of the exhibition which clearly said about my subjects — females and their diverse identity, role and reality,’ Liton said, adding that painting itself was a language.

As part of the exhibition, Liton’s international award-winning silent short film titled ‘ICU’ (I See You) screened at the AFD auditorium.

‘I feel that the visual art tells everything, it requires no words,’ said Liton, who studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Chittagong University and was influenced by theatre, heritage and storytelling.

At the exhibition, a painting shows women running away from the smoke of a battle ground with flags of the United States and Israel leading the bombing symbolically and another artwork depicts a woman in court while her face covered by the flag of Iran and other women wearing hijab. A painting portrays a woman in prison while men are watching her.

Another painting shows a woman wearing sari dancing in a moonlit night and another artwork shows a pregnant woman walking on a sea. Another work shows a woman playing with a baby covered in a ball.

The exhibition pays tributes to Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman who was found dead in custody on September 16, 2022, after her arrest by the morality police in Tehran for an alleged breach of Iran’s strict dress rules for women.
