
At least 10 panels and independent candidates are going to contest in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union elections as the timeline for submitting nomination papers ended on Wednesday.
Although 658 nomination papers were sold against 28 posts of DUCSU, 509 nomination papers were submitted till the last submission day, officials said.
Chief returning officer for the DUCSU polls, Professor Mohammad Zashim Uddin, presented the information at his office Wednesday evening.
Besides, 1,109 nomination papers, out of 1,427 that were sold until the last date of the sale of nomination papers on Tuesday, were submitted for hall union elections in 18 halls till the last date of submission on Wednesday, according to a DU press release.
A number of aspirants said that more panels might be formed in the coming days.
Different student bodies continued announcing the panels on the last date of nomination paper submission for DUCSU polls, scheduled to be held on September 9.Â
Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, on the day announced its full panel for DUCSU and hall union elections.
JCD president Rakibul Islam Rakib announced the 27-member DUCSU panel at a press briefing at the Aparajeyo Bangla on the university campus.
From the panel, Md Abidul Islam Khan will contest for the post of vice-president, Shaikh Tanveer Bari Hamim for general secretary and Tanvir Al Hadi Mayed for assistant general secretary.
Rakib urged the university administration to make an outline about student politics on the campus following demands of the general students and student bodies before beginning the election campaign to avoid any conflicting situation.Â
The panel, jointly selected by JCD’s central committee and its DU unit, left the post of research and publication secretary vacant in honour of Sanjida Ahmed Tanney, a student injured during the 2024 mass uprising, said Rakib.
The panel also included Ariful Islam to contest for the post of liberation war and democratic movements affairs secretary, Ehsanul Islam for science and technology secretary, Chamon Fariya Islam Meghla for common room, reading room and cafeteria secretary, Mehedi Hasan for international affairs secretary, Abu Hayat Md Zulfiqur Jesun for literature and culture secretary, Chim Chimya Chakma for sports secretary, Saif Ullah for transport affairs secretary, Syed Imam Hasan Anik for social service secretary, Arkanul Islam Rupak for career development secretary, Anwar Hossain for health and environment secretary and Mehedi Hasan Munna for human rights and law secretary.
The panel also includes 13 members, including Zarif Rahman, Mahmudul Hasan, Nahid Hasan, Hasibur Rahman Sakib, Shamim Rana, Yasin Arafat Alif, Munim Hasan Arup, Ranjan Roy, Soyaib Islam Omi, Meherunnesa Keya, Ibnu Ahmed, Shamsul Haque Anan and Nityananda Paul.
JCD leaders along with the selected panel members later submitted the nomination papers at the university’s Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building.
Later in the afternoon, the DU unit of JCD announced a 204-member panel for 18 halls of the university to contest for hall union elections.
Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad leaders also announced its supported panel titled ‘Baishamyabirodhi Shikkharthi Sangsad’ at a separate press conference held on the campus.
From the panel, Abdul Qader will contest for the post of vice-president, Abu Baker Mojumder for general secretary and Ashrefa Khatun for assistant general secretary.
The panel also left the post of research and publication secretary vacant in honour of uprising injured student Tanney.
The panel included Nahiyan Faruk to contest for the post of literature and culture secretary, Mohir Alom for social service secretary, Hasibul Islam for liberation war and democratic movements affairs secretary, Md Sakib for international affairs secretary, Al Amin Sarkar for sports secretary, Anika Tahsina for human rights and law secretary, Mitu Akhter for common room, reading room and cafeteria secretary, Ahad Bin Islam Shoaib for science and technology secretary, Sabbir Ahmed for health and environment secretary, Rezwan Ahmed Rifat for career development secretary, and Ismail Hossain Rudra for transport affairs secretary.
Besides, Masuduzzaman, Ferdous Ayman, Ishmael, Taapsee Rabeya, Armanul Islam, Abdullah Al Mahmud, Rifti Al Jabed, Ashraf Anik, Rownak Jahan, Mahfuza Nawar Naureen, Nurul Islam Nahid, Arifur Rahman and Ferdous Alam will contest for the posts of member from the panel.
Factions of three left student organisations, including Bangladesh Students’ Union, Socialist Students’ Front and Bangladesh Chhatra League-BCL jointly announced their 11-member panel titled ‘Aparajeyo 71 - Adammya 24’.
Chhatra Union president Mahir Shahriar Reza announced the panel at a press conference at Madhu’s Canteen saying that some posts in the panel were kept vacant and would be filled later.
From the panel, Naim Hasan will contest for the post of vice-president, Enamul Hasan Anay for general secretary, Aditi Islam for assistant general secretary, Fahmida Alam for liberation war and democratic movements affairs secretary, Shakib Mahmud for international affairs secretary, Abdullah Ibne Hasan for literature and culture secretary, Masfiquzzaman Tain for transport affairs secretary and Minhazul Islam Farhan for health and environment secretary.
The panel kept two posts vacant to support Tanney and common room, reading room and cafeteria secretary candidate Shurmi Chakma.
Arpita Ahmed Abdhi, Junayed Hossen and Mahbubur Rahman will contest for the posts of member from the panel.
Islami Chhatra Andolan Bangladesh also announced its 28-member panel after submitting the nomination papers.
Yasin Arafat will contest for the post of vice-president while Khairul Ahsan Marjan for general secretary and Saif Mohammad Alauddin for the post of assistant general secretary from the panel.
Jamal Uddin Khalid and National Citizen Party’s suspended leader Mahin Sarker-led panel titled ‘Samannita Shikkharthi Sangsad’ was also announced on the day.
From the 25-member panel, Khalid will contest for the vice-president post while Mahin for general secretary and Fateha Sharmin for assistant general secretary post.
Former Student Against Discrimination leader Umama Fatema also submitted her nomination paper on the day and announced the name of her panel ‘Satantra Shikkharthi Oikya’ saying that the full panel list would be announced today.
Students’ Federation of Bangladesh’s DU unit convener and aspiring DUCSU AGS candidate Armanul Hoque also announced the title of a panel ‘Unity to Rebuild’, which would be led by SFB.
Meanwhile, another left student organisations’ panel ‘Pratirodh Parshad’ led by Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Emi and Meghmallar Bose withdrew its candidate from the research and publication secretary post in honour of Tanney.
Earlier, Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad announced its panel ‘DUCSU for Change’ and Islami Chhatra Shibir announced ‘Oikyabaddha Shikkharthi Jote’, among others.
University administration is scheduled to publish the final list of the candidates on August 26.
The DUCSU elections are scheduled for September 9.
The latest DUCSU elections were held on March 11, 2019, after a 28-year gap.
