Election commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud on Wednesday confirmed that the Election Commission’s primary focus was on the coming parliamentary elections instead of local government polls.
Speaking at a meeting with election commission officials regarding the updating of the voter list at the regional election office in Kashipur in Barishal, Abdur Rahmanel Masud emphasised the commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair and credible elections.
Citing the interim government chief adviser’s announcement to hold the national elections by late 2025 or early 2026, he said that the parliamentary polls were the commission’s top priority.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, he acknowledged voters’ reluctance to cast votes in the past and pledged to overcome the challenge by restoring public trust.
To ensure accuracy, 35,000 data collectors are working nationwide on the voter list update which includes adding new voters, removing deceased individuals and identifying fake voters, he said.
The commission is also taking steps to prevent foreign nationals, including Rohingyas, from being added to the voter list, the chief election commissioner said.
Abdur Rahmanel Masud urged citizens to cooperate in the voter list updating process.
The voter list updating, which began on Monday, will continue until February 3.
Regional election officer Anisur Rahman presided over the meeting, attended by senior election officials from the Barishal district.
