STUDENTS of Islamic University staged a blockade on the Kushtia–Khulna highway on Wednesday, demanding urgent repair of the deteriorating road.
The highway near the university’s main gate was blocked for nearly one and a half hours, resulting in long traffic jams.
The students ended the protest after receiving assurances of road repair from the district commissioners of Kushtia and Khulna over phone.
Former coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement IU branch SM Sweet, co-coordinators Golam Rabbani, Yashirul Kabir, Mubashir Amin, student organisation Bandhan, and other students participated in the protest.
SM Sweet warned, ‘If the district administration fails to begin road repairs within a week, we will launch a stronger movement. We announced this program seven days ago to prevent anyone from politicizing the issue.’
A bus driver, who wished to remain anonymous, said, ‘This highway urgently needs repair. Vehicles often face accidents due to the poor road condition, causing serious public inconvenience.’
