A member of the University Grants Commission Bangladesh, Professor Md Saidur Rahman, has called on the country’s universities to come forward to harness the potential of generative artificial intelligence, conduct research to address challenges and create skilled manpower in this sector.

He said this while speaking as chief guest at a workshop titled Generative AI for Productivity and Innovation at the UGC on Wednesday, said a press release.


The two-day training is being organised by the UGC’s information and communication technology department and the Bangladesh Research and Education Network.

UGC secretary Md Fakhrul Islam spoke as special guest at the event, chaired by ICT department director Md Omar Farukh.

UGC’s additional director of IMCT department Muhammad Nazmul Islam delivered welcome address at the event.

Professor Saidur Rahman said, ‘Bangladesh is lagging behind in the use of data driven generative AI.’

He called on university researchers to come forward to develop data driven generative AI suitable for the country, taking into account issues such as language, religion, culture, etc.

Warning about the negative effects of generative AI, Professor Saidur Rahman said that using it would make daily work much easier. However, there is a fear of job loss for many. He advised the rational use of Generative AI and continuing the practice of creativity.

UGC Secretary Fakhrul Islam said that there was no alternative to using generative AI to take human thinking, skills and creativity to a higher level.
