Chattogram Port, the country’s principal seaport, posted strong growth in handling containers, cargoes, and vessels in the current calendar and financial year, said the Chittagong Port Authority.
According to official data and press release published by the CPA on Monday, the port handled 2,849,542 TEUs of containers, 11,50,67,200 metric tonnes of cargo, and 3,552 vessels in the first 10 months (January–October) of the 2025 calendar year.
These posted a 4.87 per cent rise in container handling, 12.64 per cent growth in cargo handling, and a 10.97 per cent increase in vessel handling compared with the same period last year. During this time, the port processed 132,328 more TEUs, 129,08,174 more tonnes of cargo, and 351 additional vessels.
Moreover, during the first four months (July–October) of the financial year 2025–26, the port recorded 1,213,805 TEUs, 4,52,82,907 tonnes of cargo, and 1,422 vessels, which marked a year-on-year increase of 10.15 per cent in containers, 15.76 per cent in cargo, and 11 per cent in vessel handling.
Compared with the same period of the previous fiscal year, the port handled 111,888 more TEUs, 61,66,405 more tonnes of cargo, and 141 more vessels, the port data, signed by its secretary, stated.
At the New Mooring Container Terminal, operated by Chittagong Dry Dock Limited, performance has also improved notably as in the first four months of FY 2025–26, the terminal handled 468,871 TEUs and 253 vessels, showing 15.50 per cent growth in container throughput and 19.35 per cent growth in vessel handling.
This represented an increase of 62,919 TEUs and 41 vessels compared with the corresponding period last fiscal year.
Chattogram Port also witnessed a marked reduction in vessel waiting time over the period.
According to the port data, ships experienced zero waiting time on 9 days in September, 18 days in October, and 19 days in November, and received berths immediately upon arrival.
CPA said that this has enabled importers to take delivery of goods much faster, while exporters have been able to load outbound cargo on schedule.
Moreover, the resulting improvement has shortened the port’s overall lead time, a change that is expected to ease consumer prices and further accelerate the country’s export competitiveness, the authority added.
The officials of the port also attributed the port’s improved efficiency to the addition of modern cargo and container-handling equipment, expansion of yard capacity, increased digitalisation, and the dedicated efforts of port officials, workers, and stakeholders.
They also said that continued user cooperation across levels has contributed to sustained growth.
‘A delegation from Maersk, which travelled from Singapore to Chattogram recently, expressed satisfaction with the port’s operational progress, particularly the reduction in vessel waiting times and improved performance across NCT and other terminals,’ said the press release.
The port officials also said that the port’s achievements would further enhance the image and open new horizons for future port management and development.
According to the CPA, the port, Bangladesh’s main gateway for international trade, handles nearly 92 per cent of the nation›s general import–export cargo and about 98 per cent of all containerised goods.
