The country’s revenue collection reached a milestone of Tk 90,825 crore in July-September, the first quarter of the current financial year 2025-26, which is the highest-ever revenue collection in the first quarter of any fiscal year.

According to the National Board of Revenue’s data released on Friday, the revenue collection experienced a growth of 20.21 per cent year-on-year from that Tk 75,554.78 crore collected in the first quarter of FY25.

However, the NBR had not yet published the detailed revenue collection data, which usually includes single-month collection and targets, so it was still unknown whether the collection was below or met the targets.

Earlier in July-August, the collections were Tk 54,423 crore, falling Tk 6,577 crore short of the targeted Tk 61,000 crore.

During the July-September period of FY26, collection from customs was Tk 27,528 crore, which was 11.74 per cent higher than that of Tk 24,625 crore received in the first three months of FY25.

Revenue collection from the VAT section was Tk 34,819 crore in the first quarter of FY26, which is 29.74 per cent higher than that of Tk 26,838 crore collected in the same period of the past financial year.

Moreover, fetching a growth of 18.26 per cent, revenue collection from income tax sector stood at Tk 28,478 crore in the first three months of FY26, which was Tk 24,081 crore in the corresponding period of FY25, the NBR data stated.

Still, the revenue collection from indirect sources was higher than that from direct sources in July-September of FY26, according to the NBR data.

For FY26, the government set a revenue collection target of Tk 4,99,000 crore through the NBR, which was about 8 per cent of the total GDP.

To reach the target, Bangladesh needs to collect revenue of approximately Tk 40,000 crore a month.

‘In the July-September quarter of FY26, record revenue collection was achieved across all major sectors, income tax, VAT and customs,’ the NBR stated.

It said that through expanding tax net, ensuring compliance, preventing evasion, and recovering evaded revenues for deposit into the national treasury, the NBR would continue its tireless efforts to further accelerate this growth trend in revenue collection.

In FY25, the NBR faced a record revenue collection shortfall of Tk 92,625 after collecting Tk 3,70,874 crore, which was about 3.08 per cent lower than that of Tk 3,82,678 crore in FY24. In FY25, the revised target for revenue collection was Tk 4,63,500 crore.
