The chairman of the National Board of Revenue instructed its officials on Tuesday to integrate all automation systems, including the Automated Risk Management System, Bangladesh Single Window, and Automated Systems for Customs Data, for operational purposes.Â
He also asked them to conduct annual audits to prevent businesses from being adversely affected by VAT audits, according to a press release.
He was addressing the stakeholders after visiting the Mongla Customs House on Tuesday.
He also underscored that the revenue department is one of the most critical sectors of any country, and any disruption within it causes significant national harm.
‘I hope importers, exporters, C&F agents, port authorities, and Mongla Customs House would continue customs collection and related operations seamlessly by ignoring rumors and prioritising national interests,’ he added.
He also emphasised the importance of enhancing operational efficiency among all officers and staff of customs houses to keep pace with developed nations.
At the start of his speech, he expressed condolences over the tragic crash of a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft on Milestone School and College building in Dhaka, which claimed the lives of several children and others.
At Mongla Customs House, he inspected the physical examination processes at the container yard, the vehicle storage yard, and the auction-designated vehicle yard, said the press release.
He also held a discussion with officers and employees of Mongla Customs House, the Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate, Khulna, and the Tax Zone, Khulna, along with C&F agents and journalists.
He emphasised prompting cargo clearance under risk management frameworks, effective enforcement activities, adherence to import policies, automation, reducing litigation, and accelerating the collection of outstanding revenues.
He stressed the importance of increasing the number of income tax and VAT registrations, monitoring non-compliant taxpayers, and expanding the tax net, rather than solely focusing on revenue growth.
Additionally, he suggested adopting five- to six-year projects, if necessary, to enhance the taxpayer base.
He also highlighted the identification of zero-return filers who do not deposit taxes, and instructed for the swift completion of ongoing income tax, VAT, and customs projects, according to the press release.
