Bangladesh Cricket Board president Aminul Islam backed Mehidy Hasan Miraz as ODI captain but suggested that they might reconsider their approach of choosing different captains for different formats.
Mehidy, who registered his first series win as a captain when the Tigers beat the West Indies by 179 runs in the third and final ODI on Thursday, has had a bumpy ride, as Bangladesh lost three consecutive series under him, one as stand-in.Â
However, Aminul said that Mehidy would need more time to grow as a captain.
‘He’s a new captain, but we all know he has leadership qualities. He needs time to grow. Wins and losses are part of the journey, and a captain’s maturity comes with experience. Miraz has that potential within him,’ Aminul told reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Thursday during the third ODI.
Aminul also hinted at a shift in their thinking regarding the team’s leadership structure. After Najmul Hossain Shanto stepped down from Test captaincy in June, the BCB has yet to announce the next captain in the longer version.
‘There’s no rule that we must have different captains for every format,’ Aminul said.
‘Earlier we discussed the pros and cons of such an approach—it seemed to have more advantages. Still, we’ll see who among the regulars can handle the responsibility. One player might lead in all formats, or someone could take charge in two.’
Liton Das, the current T20 captain, is believed to be a frontrunner for the red-ball role as well. However, Aminul said that nothing has been finalised yet.
‘We’re still in the process,’ he said. ‘We’ll talk to a few players. It’s not just about the board or the coach’s choice—the captain himself has to be interested.’
Bangladesh will play a two-match Test series against Ireland next month.
