Bangladesh Cricket Board president Aminul Islam Bulbul on Wednesday hoped that the national team wouldn’t have to come back to Bangladesh before the Afghanistan series following the ongoing Asia Cup in the UAE.

However, the chairman of the cricket operations, Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, said that the Liton Das-led team would return if they couldn’t make it to the Super Four stage.

Bangladesh are scheduled to play three T20Is and three ODIs starting on October 2 in the UAE, whereas the Asia Cup is scheduled to finish on September 28.

But Bangladesh’s chance of going into the next round hangs in the balance despite their win against Afghanistan on Tuesday.

If Sri Lanka beat Afghanistan today, Bangladesh will go through. An Afghanistan win can also help Bangladesh, but the margin needs to be a significant one.

‘Unfortunately, if we don’t get to play in the Super Four, then we have to bring back the team since the Afghanistan series is much later,’ Fahim told the reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday.

Aminul, who was standing next to Fahim, was rather optimistic. ‘Insha Allah they won’t be back, Insha Allah,’ he said.

‘In T20 cricket, there is no room for emotion. You saw Sri Lanka were almost beaten by Hong Kong. I can only say, we are not far,’ Aminul further said.

‘Our team, their off-the-field attitude and on-field performance – all of that makes me feel positive,’ he added.
